CURTAIN CALL Phone company comes to rescue of theatre group A BLACKBURN based company has come to the rescue of a Darwen-based theatre group - just seven days before curtain up! Darwen Youth Theatre had just about given up the search for an authentic telephone for their production of the 1950s musical Guys and Dolls. Abbey Telecom, in Higher Church Street, learned of the group's strife and stepped up with a mint- condition, genuine, black Bakelite phone - on free loan for the run of the show. Show director Joe Fairhurst said: "We are working on a very tight budget for the group's first show, and couldn't even consider buying an authentic '50s telephone. "They retail at around £126, so this is a very generous gesture by Tony Raynor of Abbey Telecom." Mr Fairhurst said the Guys and Dolls cast and crew had gone through a stormy passage to get to the dress rehearsal stage. "I just hope the people of Darwen come out in their hundreds to support these young people. They deserve all the plaudits from the public." And two of the show's leading ladies are stars of the future, according to Mr Fairhurst. Sisters Angela and Lisa Jackson from Darwen are appearing for the first time in a musical together. "Angela is simply brilliant as Adelaide," said Mr Fairhurst. "And Lisa is splendid as Salvationist Sarah." The curtain goes up at the Darwen Library Theatre for the first night on Thursday, June 8, and the show will continue on June 9, 10, and 11 - the Sunday performance being a matinee.
