Big Brother is helping you BUSINESS Angels have got a halo for job creation. The scheme in which some of Blackburn's newest firms were adopted by their bigger, brothers has seen 34 new jobs created In the town's City Challenge area. The Business Angels scheme, which only started at the beginning of the year, cost just £10,000 of City Challenge cash to set up. Blackburn Partnership, which runs the scheme, teamed up ten of Blackburn's biggest firms with 10 of If smallest Ten months into the first year, eight of the small firms are thriving. One was taken over and one was advised to shut down before Its debts became too serious! An added complication was that one of the scheme's guardians, construction firm Rawlings, also shut down during the year. For Partnership chief executive Peter Robinson, even advising a small company to shut, preventing the owner getting in very hot water, represents a success for the Guardian Angels. The scheme's board, chaired by East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce honourary vice president Jim McKinstry, Is to give an award at the end of the year for the small firm which have got the most out of the scheme* Success Said Mr Robinson: The board has had to face the realities of business life, often at very short notice, and has coped very well Indeed. The number of jobs created by these young companies is a quite remarkable achievement. And it has attracted international attention. Mr Robinson has been Invited to outline the scheme to the First European Forum on Business Creation to he held at Lille, France, this Thursday and Friday. Guardian Angels Is now recruiting young companies for 1995. They must be based in Blackburn's City Challenge area.
